Discus- or bell-shaped amoeba dorsal covered with a flexible layer of scales (tectum). In locomotion somewhat flattened and disc-like, with hyaloplasm extending as a veil surrounding a raised central or post central granuloplasmic mass.
The scales show a remarkable variety in their structure. Some genera have spines and some can form cysts. There are approximately 25 different species described. An overview of scales can be found
